The Best Tools for Digital Design and Etsy Selling

Starting an Etsy shop and creating digital designs has been an exciting journey, but it wouldn’t be possible without the right tools. Over the past few months, I’ve explored several platforms and resources to help bring my ideas to life. Here’s a quick review of my favourite tools for digital design and selling on Etsy, especially if you’re just starting out.

1. Canva – perfect for digital design

Canva is my go-to tool for creating digital designs. It’s user-friendly, even for beginners, and offers a vast library of templates, fonts, and elements to work with. I use it for everything—from designing my digital prints to creating listing mock-ups for Etsy. The free version is a great starting point, but upgrading to Canva Pro unlocks more features, such as premium elements and the ability to resize designs easily.

2. Playground AI – AI digital designer

When I want to experiment with digital design ideas and generate unique concepts, I use Playground AI. It’s a fantastic tool for exploring different artistic styles, tweaking images, and generating high-quality artwork. Once I have an image I’m happy with, I upscale it to ensure it’s print-ready before making further edits.

3. GIMP – free photoshop alternative

For more advanced editing, I turn to GIMP—a free alternative to Photoshop. It allows me to refine my images, adjust colours, and add textures or effects that enhance my designs. While it has a bit of a learning curve, it’s a powerful tool once you get the hang of it.

4. Etsy – selling platform

Etsy is, of course, the heart of my business. It’s a fantastic platform for creative entrepreneurs, offering a built-in audience of buyers who love handmade and unique products. However, success on Etsy requires understanding SEO (search engine optimisation), strong product descriptions, and eye-catching listing images.

5. Printful – print on demand platform

While I primarily sell digital products, I’ve dabbled a little in Printful, having created two stickers for my shop. Printful integrates seamlessly with Etsy, allowing sellers to offer print-on-demand products such as mugs, T-shirts, and posters. It’s a great way to expand an Etsy shop without having to manage inventory or shipping.

6. eRank – rank checking tool

One of the biggest challenges on Etsy is getting your products seen. eRank is a brilliant tool for researching keywords, analysing competitors, and optimising your shop for Etsy’s search algorithm. It helps me find the best tags to use, track my shop’s performance, and identify trends in my niche.

7. EtsyHunt & Etsy Check – trend checking tools

I also use tools like EtsyHunt and Etsy Check to analyse market trends and see what’s working for other sellers. These platforms help with product research, pricing strategies, and keyword insights, making them valuable resources for growing my shop.

Tips for Beginners

If you’re just starting out, I recommend focusing on learning one tool at a time rather than trying to master everything at once. Canva is perfect for beginners, while eRank is essential for Etsy SEO. Over time, experimenting with AI tools like Playground AI and using Etsy research tools will help refine your creative and marketing strategies.

Running an Etsy shop is a learning process, but having the right tools makes it much easier! Do you have any favourite design or Etsy tools? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
