Dress Like a Storybook Girl: A Summer Capsule Wardrobe Guide

Crafting the perfect summer capsule wardrobe is something I’ve wanted to do for years. There’s something quietly powerful about dressing with intention. When the summer sun is shining and your days are filled with shady walks, café journaling, and spontaneous bookstore detours, it helps to have a small, thoughtful wardrobe that feels like you.

I haven’t perfected my capsule wardrobe yet – but I love the idea of building one that’s soft, comfortable, slightly vintage, and completely romantic. Think breezy dresses, practical shoes, woven bags, and accessories that whisper “gentle heroine energy.”

Here’s how I’m approaching my storybook summer style, one piece at a time.

👗 This is the second post in my Bookshop Girl’s Summer Series: Living a Storybook Life — a whimsical seven-part guide to crafting a gentle, bookish summer filled with creativity, nostalgia, and literary charm.

1. Choose a Signature Colour Palette

A flat lay of summer clothes in tonal colours — linen, cotton, lace — surrounded by vintage jewellery and paperbacks.

Pick 3–5 colours that you’ll weave through your summer capsule wardrobe. Pastels? Earthy tones? Soft whites with faded blues and blush?

💭 Amy’s Note: My dream palette is linen cream, sage green, rose pink, and dusty blue.

2. Focus on Floaty, Breathable Staples

A longline dress hanging from a wardrobe door, sunlight casting shadows across a worn book on the floor.

Include a few dresses, wide-leg trousers, and breathable tops for your summer capsule wardrobe. Choose pieces that are easy to layer and feel good on warm, wandering days.

💭 Amy’s Note: I’m always on the lookout for floaty dresses with pockets. Pockets are essential for paperbacks, obviously.

Try This: Breathable summer dresses with pockets

3. Include Lightweight Layers for British Weather

A cardigan, light jacket, or crochet wrap will be your best friend on breezy days or bookstore visits with over-enthusiastic air-con.

💭 Amy’s Note: I’m in the process of making a pastel coloured crochet cardigan, hoping it’ll be ready before it gets too hot!

Try This: Light knit cardigans – to keep you cool but looking great

4. Shoes for Wandering (and Looking Cute Doing It)

Comfort is key. Think sandals, ballet flats, lace-up boots for cooler days, or even dainty trainers that match your vibe.

💭 Amy’s Note: I once wore impractical shoes on a “short walk” that turned into a 2-hour stroll… never again. Now it’s flats only.

Try This: Comfortable rustic looking sandals

5. Add Bookshop-Girl Accessories

A straw bag spilling with a scarf, flowers, and a paperback, sitting on a cafe chair with a cappuccino.

This is where the magic happens. A ribbon-tied ponytail, a woven basket bag, a linen headband, a thrifted brooch, a pin with a quote from Austen.

💭 Amy’s Note: I have a collection on enamel pins on my book themed tote bag that always get compliments.

Try This: Literary pins – on Etsy, for decorating your tote, scarf or favourite cardi!

6. Keep It Playful and True to You

Your capsule doesn’t have to be perfect – just full of joy. Choose pieces that make you feel like your favourite fictional character. Cottagecore? Quiet academic? Cosy mystery detective?

💭 Amy’s Note: I like to imagine I’m dressing for the life I want: part bookshop girl, part tea witch, part wandering poet.
